The closing -- and possibly the biggest

The closing -- and possibly the biggest -- even nail came with an entire overhaul of the battle system -- substituting the simplistic tick-based system with a more complex mechanic which demanded the use of unique abilities and constant runescape player input -- à la every other MMORPG under the sun. Whilst the machine itself was not actually all that horrible and may somewhat be regarded as an advancement, it -- along with the armour visuals upgrade -- demonstrated just how tone-deaf Jagex were about what the majority of veteran runescape players adored about the runescape game.

Jagex finally realised that, almost unbearably cynically, they could sell the older, beloved armour designs as cosmetic items for real money money (demonstrating the practice of so-called real-world gambling was in fact okay, so long as Jagex were doing it).Quests are full of discretionary and branching conversation options, and it is dialogue worth reading. It's wry, with a penchant for parody, and it rewards chatty runescape gamers will cracking punchlines and fourth-wall-breaking gags. It has never been a sport that takes itself seriously.

As we visit Varrock, a town famed for its big central street that runescape players use to economically and quickly develop their fire creating ability by creating long rows of them, I place a runescape participant wearing the fanciest of rainbow boots. They're a reward, it turns out, for completing the Stronghold of Security, a very RuneScape method of managing account safety. Basically, it's a dungeon that educates you not to give your password out, and use better safety. Until you get netting you a beautiful pair of sneakers you answer questions offered to you by doors.

"Will Jagex block me from saying my password in-game?" One door inquires, referencing an older scam where runescape players would tell other runescape players that this clear lie, inspiring them to sort it into chat, allowing everybody see it. Embarrassingly, it was once fallen for by a part of Jagex. "He was at the office and went on his personal account," recalls Bridges. He tried it, and a few minutes later he found he couldn't log in anymore."
